Addressing Enterprise Business and Facilities Planning

Addressing Enterprise Business and Facilities Planning

“There are few Enterprise Business and Facilities Planning systems which eliminate shortcomings,” according to manufacturing journalist Thomas R. Cutler in the current issue of Automation.com. Cutler suggests, “A sophisticated state-of-the-art linear programming model is required that uses optimization tools to quickly and easily solve extremely complex business problems. The value must provide a solution that represents the best solution for a business based upon the current and projected operating environment.”

Rebecca Gill, vice-president with Technology Group International, an Enterprise Business and Facilities Planning provider noted that, “The system integrates diverse input parameters, which describe your current business environment, to derive a single coherent optimum solution to any distribution and/or manufacturing related business problem. The system handles manufacturing constraints such as total labor availability at a facility, manufacturing labor requirements by product, multi-step routings and variable production rates. Distribution constraints include warehouse storage and inbound/outbound handling capacities, as well as carrier availability, capacity, and cost by mode (such as 53’ van, 48’ van, TOFC, rail, flatbed). Moreover, the system is designed so that it can readily be used in a wide variety of business environments. These include process, discrete, repetitive and make to order manufacturing environments, as well as both single and multi-location distribution environments.”

Surrounding this linear optimization process must be a series of extremely user friendly graphical user interface (GUI) application interfaces that make creation, use, solution and interpretation of even the most complex business situation easy and straight forward. Output information must be viewed through generation of a series of reports that include production plans and schedules, facility service areas by product and inventory levels by storage location and type.

A variety of model configurations should be easily selected by the user. These configurations must allow the solution of problems ranging from long range facilities planning and analysis, to short term tactical planning, production scheduling, and carrier assignment. By simply changing a single selection, the user must be given the ability to find answers to questions starting out at a highly aggregated level, and then drill down to solutions at progressively more detailed levels.

The systems interfaces must allow data to be stored in the system at an extremely detailed level for use in daily execution planning of production schedules, labor requirements and restrictions, and carrier selection. Using user defined rules in conjunction with this same detail information, the system must provide the user with the capability of aggregating the information into groupings of data types from individual SKU’s being aggregated to form product groupings, for purposes of engaging in long or intermediate range facilities planning and analysis tasks.

A Background to Plasma Flat Screen Tv’s and Displays

A Background to Plasma Flat Screen Tv’s and Displays

Plasma Technology has been with us since its inception in the mid 1960?s and it is indeed LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Technology that is actually the younger and newer of the two types of technology available with Plasma being with us since the mid 60?s.

If we look at the basics of the technology behind it we find that in its simplistic form it is the heating up of tiny cells with inert gasses trapped between two panels of glass that comprise a Plasma Display Screen.

Again to be simplistic about it effectively what happens is that the gas in the cells is electronically turned into plasma which then triggers off a reaction with the gas and causes phosphors to emit light therefore depending on the temperature of the gasses and the electrical current depends which colours the phosphors turn into.

Now I know this is a gross over signification of what actually a Plasma Display actually does and this will no doubt cause many a technical geek to start foaming at the mouth but in a nutshell that’s what plasma displays do.

With regards to the actual technology itself Plasma technology is probably one of the older forms of technology used for televisions and flat screen TVs in particular since it’s been around since 1964 when it was first ?conceived? for want of a better description at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne.

Plasma Display screen sizes can of course vary like most technologies but it is interesting to note that from an initial start where the sizes were little more than 21 inches Plasma technology displays have now grown rapidly to become the largest and widest of all screens by and large available at the present time.

To a certain degree the superior brightness, faster response time and the greater colour spectrum, wider viewing angle of colour plasma displays have over the years ?ruled the roost? with regards to large screen displays however technology has changed with regards to LCD TVs and the technological gap has narrowed.

In these eco friendly times you will find that one of the main selling points with LCD screens nowadays lies with the fact that Plasma tend to be very power hungry (and as such warm) and by and large heavier so very much of an environmental disaster zone as far as TV?s are concerned.

From 2006 onwards industry analysts noted that effectively LCD TV?s were overtaking plasma displays particularly in the large a 40inch plus market where basically plasma previously enjoyed a massive dominance since the inception of technology. One of the other areas of consolidation within the Industry has seen the Plasma manufacturing base very much consolidate with now over 50 brands being manufactured by only 5 companies ? this of course has led to economies of scale hitherto imagined where the technology of more and more screens can be shared and further help cut the overall cost base.

{Historically the superior brightness of Plasma Technology made it a favourite amongst TV designers for the faith rendition it gave the picture quality however this is now starting to be matched with the latest and better quality LCD TV?s appearing into the marketplace.|Over the years it has been felt that some of the technological aspects of Plasma technology leant it self more to the higher end of screen performances such as greater brightness control, screen resolution etc) however this is now changing. For quite sometime there was a general misconception within the marketplace that LCD technology only suited small screens and that Plasma was effectively the main provider of all large screens.
