Easy To Understand Solar Energy Fundamentals

Let’s start with the most commonly heard and seen words in the solar industry, solar panels. Solar panels consist of photovoltaic or PV cells. These PV cells are grouped together into different configurations depending on the size of the panel needed. Also known as solar modules, these panels can convert sunlight into direct current or DC power.

Yes, these are those intriguing rectangular or square things that suddenly appeared on your neighbor’s roof or on the top of your local favorite coffee house. Suddenly appeared may be a misnomer though, because it does take a little effort to have them installed and that’s why it is advisable to use a certified, properly trained solar installer. DIY is a possibility, but one must really do their homework and as in any construction job there are many intricacies that one must be attuned to. Once you’ve decided on going solar, a competent licensed solar contractor may save you from having “war stories” to tell later on.

Time to talk AC/DC, no not the band, they have another kind of high energy. Okay, the panels are up and as the sun are collected through the panels. Then the sunlight is converted into DC power and is sent to an inverter. In turn, the inverter converts the DC power into alternating power or AC power, which is the standard electrical current found in our homes. An inverter works for stand alone systems or can supply power to an electrical grid.

From the inverter the AC power then flows into an electrical panel, commonly known as a breaker box. AC power from the breaker box is ready to light your home and run your computer and other electrical appliances, coffee maker topping my list.

Homes all have utility meters. These meters keep track or measure how much electricity you use or store. So if your solar system provides you with more power than you use, your meter will run backward. In turn the electrical company will then give you credits which will be reflected in savings on your next bill. Sweet!

In addition to the savings on your utility bill, there are also state, county and city tax incentives available in many locations. There are also additional rebates available from local government entities, as well as discounts available from local solar installers for first time solar power construction consumers.

There’s a lot of information to read through and digest when it comes to solar power. So do yourself a favor by making notes of what you need clarified and then be pro active and contact us with your questions and concerns. Our solar info team will do their best to guide you in the right direction.
